Fact Sheet and Frequently Asked Questions
Regarding Background Check Requirements

Effective April 28, 2008, Ohio law requires all new applicants for licensure to complete both an Ohio criminal background check and an FBI criminal background check, conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I).

Who is affected?

  • All new applicants applying for a new license.

Process

  • Where can I go to complete the BCI and FBI background check requirement?
Check with your local law enforcement agencies or use the Ohio Attorney General's website:
    http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Business/Services-for-Business/WebCheck/Webcheck-Community-Listing

  • How do I have the background checks done?
OVMLB requests that both background checks (BCI & FBI) be completed electronically so the fingerprints will be sent immediately to BCI&I. This allows for a much quicker processing of the prints and results reported to OVMLB.

  • How do I have the background checks completed while I am out of state?
Individuals completing the background checks while out of state will be required to utilize fingerprint cards and must request them from the BCI (877)224-0043. If you choose to have the background checks completed while out of state, it could take several months for OVMLB to receive the results.

  • Where do I send the results of the background check?
The results need to be sent directly from the BCI&I to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, 77 South High Street, 16th Floor, Columbus, Ohio 43215-6108. Please be sure to list "required for licensure under Section 4741.10 ORC" as the reason for fingerprinting.

  • How long does it take for OVMLB to receive my background check results?
If you have the background check completed electronically, OVMLB should receive your results within 7-10 business days. If you have the background check completed via fingerprint cards, it could take several months for OVMLB to receive the results. Results may take longer as BCI&I processing time varies and/or if a record is found during the course of the criminal background check.

  • How long are the background checks valid?
Background check information is valid for one year, or 365 days, from the date that the background check was completed.

  • How much should I expect to pay for the background checks?
The cost of the BCI background check is approximately $22 and the FBI is approximately $24. The cost may vary depending on the agency that you choose. Please note: BCI&I only accepts certified checks or money orders, payable to Treasurer-State of Ohio.

  • Who is responsible for paying for these background checks?
The applicant is responsible for this cost.

  • Who can I contact regarding the status of my background check?
You can contact the BCI&I at 877-224-0043 or P.O. Box 365, London, Ohio 43140.
