Licensing Examination Information

Effective after the April 2000 examinations, the NBE and CCT will no longer be administered. These examinations have been replaced by the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and are administered by the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME).

*Applications to register for the NAVLE must be filed at least 90 days prior to the testing window.

Requirements:

A.) If you are a student or graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary college or Ross University:

  1. Complete the State of Ohio application to register for the NAVLE. The application needs to have a recent photograph attached.

  2. If you are a fourth year student, the Ohio Board must receive a letter from the dean of your college stating that you are currently enrolled in the veterinary program and the exact date that you will be graduating.

  3. If you have graduated, the Ohio Board must receive directly from the college/university an official copy of your transcript and a photocopy of your diploma.

  4. Three letters of personal reference must be submitted to the Ohio Board. These letters should comment on your moral character from any adult who has known you for at least one year, but is not a member of your family. The letters can be faxed, emailed, or mailed via USPS to the Board office.

  5. Submit a $50.00 application processing fee in the form of a cashier's check or money order made payable to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board. Please note the Board will not accept personal checks and all application fees are non-refundable.

B.) If you are a graduate of a foreign school:

  1. You must be enrolled in the ECFVG program and have completed Steps 1, 2 & 3.

  2. The Ohio Board must receive a letter from the ECFVG Committee confirming your enrollment and completion of Steps 1, 2 & 3.

  3. Three letters of personal reference must be submitted to the Ohio Board. These letters should comment on your moral character from any adult who has known you for at least one year, but is not a member of your family.

  4. Submit a $50.00 application processing fee in the form of a cashier's check or money order made payable to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board. Please note the Board will not accept personal checks and all application fees are non-refundable.

After the requirements have been met, the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board will send you a notice of eligibility and will forward the list of eligible candidates to the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME).

You will be required to submit an examination fee to the NBVME. Visit their website at www.nbvme.org. You will receive instructions directly from NBVME regarding the actual administration of the examination.
