How to Apply for an Ohio Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate

You must be a graduate from an approved, accredited school of animal technology to become a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Ohio.

Approved schools in Ohio are:

Columbus State Community College, Raymond Walters College, University of Cincinnati, Cuyahoga Community College, Stautzenberger College, Vet Tech Institute at Bradford School. For a listing of all approved accredited schools, please visit the American Veterinary Medical Associate (AVMA) website at www.avma.org.

The Ohio Board may issue a Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate if the following requirements are met:

  1. Complete the State of Ohio application for a Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate. The application must have a recent photograph attached.
  2. An official copy of your transcript must be forwarded to the Ohio Board from the technical school indicating your degree in Animal Health Technology. The Ohio Veterinary Medical License Board will not accept a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science as a sufficient qualification for registration.
  3. You must have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) with a 75.0, or above. These scores must be transferred directly to the Ohio Board by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). These scores must be received before the Ohio Board will review an application.

  5. Submit the required fee made payable to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board:

On or after March 1 in even numbered years = $25.00

*Ohio Revised Code Section 4741 governs the practice of veterinary medicine. Please take particular notice of Section 4741.01(F), definition of a Registered Veterinary Technician and Section 4741.19(C), setting forth the duties which may be performed by a Registered Veterinary Technician and the criteria for renewal.
